About Us
The path is made by walking.
There is no trail waiting for you. Every route on every map was once somebody walking where nobody had walked.
That is where the name comes from. A ridge is not a road anyone built. It is a line worn into the mountain by the people who kept going over it.
2 month on the roof of a 4x4
I spent 2 months crossing Namibia in a 4x4 with a tent on the roof.
Somewhere in the second week I noticed something that has shaped everything I have bought since: I had stopped thinking about the tent.
When a tent works, you don't think about the tent. You think about where you are. You wake up, open the hatch, and the first thing you see is the country you came for. The gear did its job by disappearing.
When it doesn't work, it is all you think about. The zip that catches. The condensation. Wondering, at two in the morning, whether the mounting hardware is still where it was. Gear that demands your attention is stealing it from the thing you actually came to do.
That is the whole thing
The best gear is the gear you forget about.
Why this store exists
I built the store I wanted to find.
I looked for one before Namibia, and before Nepal, and before a dozen trips. What I kept finding was hundreds of listings with specs copied from one site to the next, weight figures that quietly leave out the mounting hardware, and almost nobody willing to tell me straight whether a thing would fit my car.
So: fewer products, each one chosen, and a straight answer when you ask.
The other thing I learned the slow way is that it is usually worth spending a bit more at the start. Not for the badge, and not for a spec sheet you will never test. For the version that still works in year eight, so you stop replacing it and start forgetting about it.
What we stand for
Gear you forget about
This is the standard everything is measured against. Not the spec sheet, not the marketing. Does it disappear? That is why we care about the things that sound boring until they fail, zips, hinges, seams, mounting hardware, and why we stock spare parts for what we sell. A ten-year tent with no replacement zip is a three-year tent.
Fit before features
The best tent or any other mountain or adventure gear in the world is useless on a roof it was never made for. Before anything else we talk about your vehicle: what it is, what your crossbars are rated for, how much weight you can carry up there. If nothing we sell fits your car, we will tell you that.
Plain talk
We will tell you what a product does well, what it does badly, and who it is wrong for. If the cheaper option is the right call for how you actually camp, we will say so.
We answer
Email, phone or chat, Monday to Friday, by someone who knows the catalogue. Something that bolts to your car and holds you four feet off the ground is not a purchase to make from a product page alone.
Who this is for
- For the person with a long weekend, a full tank, and a vague idea of a direction.
- For people who would rather set up in twenty minutes on a gravel pull-off than book somewhere three months out.
- For people who take the dog, and the coffee setup, and no fixed plan for Sunday.
- For people who buy once, look after it, and expect it to still work in ten years.
Where we're going
The mountains were here first and will be here after. Nothing gets conquered. You just keep going, and it helps to have gear you can stop thinking about.
